Recipe for a Crazy-Good Printer Open House
Who doesn’t like a party? I know I do. Out of the blue, I was invited by my friend Richard to attend an open house at a printing facility recently. For years I’d heard the name ‘Hannaford & Dumas’ but knew no one there. I’d never been there. A party was the perfect excuse to visit. So off we went, fighting northbound traffic to see what this “OctoberFest Open House” was all about.
Turns out, this printing company could be in the party planning business. As far as open houses for printers go, they pretty much did everything right.
It was the company’s third annual OctoberFest party, and I don’t know whether last year’s bash was anything like this one, but the place was jumpin’!
The invitation set the tone. Designed like a press pass, it read, “Meet the Press!” The party pass highlighted the company’s newest acquisition: “Our Premier Ryobi 750 10-color UV.” Meet the press: clever theme.
What did I like about this event? Just about everything. Here’s H & D’s open house recipe:
[list style=”bullet red”]
- A couple of hundred people, including…
- Customers as well as employees
- A band playing great, dance-able music for 4 hours
- Great food and drink – check this out: an Ipswich Ale truck, complete with spigots built right into the side. (Talk about elevating spirits…)
- Hot dogs cooked fresh and served with a variety of toppings
- New England clam chowder and passed hors d’oeuvres
- Wine and soft drinks
- A popcorn machine
- Made-on-the-spot chocolate chip cookies, delivered piping hot by wait staff
- Happy, laughing guests making new acquaintances and running into old friends
- High-top tables and chairs available, so guests could sit and enjoy their food
- A personal tour of the new press by the company executives
The bindery department had been cleared out to make room for the festivities, a good-size tent was erected just outside one door to house most of the food and drink, and the energy and noise level were both exuberantly high. This event had the perfect combination of food, drink, music, and lots of people who knew one another or willing to make new friends. I wish folks had worn nametags – that’s my only suggestion.
Hannaford & Dumas set the bar really high for printer open houses. I hope to snag another invitation next year.
