Imagining Print in New Places

A printed napkin ring – how clever!
I don’t remember the meal I had, but I do know it was fine. The ambience of this French bistro, right in the heart of New York’s theater district, was – just let me say it – magnifique!
There were probably oysters at the table, and definitely one of us tried the onion soup gratinee. I likely had the Crème caramel for my dessert. I always do. Complimentary macarons in a sweet little takeaway bag were handed to us by the hostess as we left to see Cabaret that night last December. (Alan Cumming is an idol of mine, and he was spectacular.)
The one thing I do remember is the printed napkin ring that encircled every crisp, white linen napkin at the table. I’d never seen one printed before, and this one was special. It was lovely. A printed, colorful illustration of chefs, complete with a rabbit, wine bottles, and a soup pot. (Someone should’ve warned the rabbit.)
There’s no wasted space, either: on the other side there’s contact information for both the NYC location and the bistro in Paris.
I was so taken by the napkin ring that I brought it home. Years ago I might’ve taken a matchbook or a business card. This piece was unique.
Whose idea was it, I wonder. The owner? The chef? A manager or hostess? Perhaps it was a creative agency hired to represent the establishment. Or was it a clever printer or designer?
At any rate, I think the application is a winner. Think of how many diners will see it, and at every meal. Think of how many of them, like me, will take it home as a memento. If you’re the printer, think of how many napkin rings you’ll be printing over time.
Maybe you’ve seen these before, in restaurants, at weddings, or at other special events. It was a new one for me. What a creative application for print. I hope to see more of them.
Bottom line for printers? When you’re out and about, in any public setting, look around. Could you introduce an original printed product that would enhance the experience?
Imagine how print might make some experience or event more special than it is.
PS: Now I’m thinking this: could these be personalized?
