Recently, when a printer asked for help finding companies that offer AR (Augmented Reality) services, I thought about it for, oh, 2 seconds, and knew who to ask. That would be Daniel Dejan, a graphic arts industry Renaissance Man. When I produced print buyer conferences, Daniel was a speaker every year – by popular demand. And I couldn’t forget his session on Augmented Reality. Just mesmerizing.
Daniel is Sappi Fine Paper’s North American ETC Print/Creative Manager. But don’t let that fool you – despite working for a paper company, he is so very knowledgeable about so many things in addition to paper, like printing, graphic design, file preparation, prepress, color management, QR codes, and AR codes.
Not sure what Augmented Reality is? Mashable.com defines it thus:
“Augmented reality (AR) is a live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data…. With the help of advanced AR technology (e.g. adding computer vision and object recognition) the information about the surrounding real world of the user becomes interactive and digitally manipulable. Artificial information about the environment and its objects can be overlaid on the real world.”
So where would a printer go to start researching AR technology? For starters, Daniel recommends these resources:
- www.metaio.com Based in CA, Metaio offers software and also a “starter kit for printers,” Junaio.
- www.layar.com Layar is strictly a software firm. Daniel notes that they hold weekly webinars (as does Metaio). I noticed their Help Center in the ‘Support’ tab on their site – very comprehensive stuff in here. Their software is “extremely intuitive, really point-and-click,” added Daniel.

- www.aurasma.com Aurasma is based in London and San Francisco and offers an AR platform. There’s an interesting series of videos on their site, under Tutorials and Webinars.
- Clickable Paper, a Ricoh product, was also singled out. It’s a “new cross-media service that enables consumers to receive related online content simply by pointing a smartphone at any printed surface,” according to their site. Good videos on this page.
Finally, Daniel said that most printers already have the resources to do AR campaigns, especially if they have strong prepress departments.
Hope these resources help.
